Sit-stand desks vs fixed-height desks: buy the adjustment you will use
A desk that moves is only useful if it reaches the heights you need, carries your equipment and works reliably. A fixed desk can still be a sensible choice when it fits the workstation properly.

Short answer
Sit-stand desks offer adjustable working height and can support changes between seated and standing work. Fixed-height desks are simpler and may suit a consistent seated setup. Neither label guarantees comfort: compare the actual user fit, equipment, mechanism and condition.
Choose on purpose
Which option fits which situation?
Choose sit-stand when changing working height is a real requirement and the complete desk covers the required range.
Choose fixed height when the seated workstation fits and simplicity, fewer moving parts or budget take priority.
Know what is being compared
Sit-stand desks
A sit-stand desk changes the height of the working surface, typically using an electric or manual mechanism. Adjustment ranges, controls and load limits differ between models.
Fixed-height desks
A fixed-height desk has a set working height, although levelling feet may correct a small floor variation. Levelling feet are not a substitute for a full working-height adjustment system.
The details that change the decision
Minimum height matters as much as maximum height
A desk advertised as height-adjustable may still be too high at its lowest setting for a particular seated arrangement. Check the published range of the complete desk, including the top. Do not compare frame-only measurements with the finished height of another product.
At the upper end, consider the equipment as well as the user. Monitor position, keyboard position and any shelf or wall obstruction must remain workable. Buying the tallest available model is not the same as choosing the best-fitting workstation.
The movement needs its own clear space
A moving desk can meet a window ledge, cabinet, chair arm or cable that never caused trouble in a fixed setup. Check the whole travel path before placing storage beneath it. Do not assume an anti-collision feature makes every obstruction harmless.
Leave cable movement as part of the installation plan. Power leads, network cables and monitor connections need an appropriate route throughout the desk’s travel. Ask the installer to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for load, clearance and cable management.
A used lifting system should be demonstrated
Ask to see the actual desk travel through its intended range with its controls functioning. Confirm the model, compatible power supply, controller and any reset instructions. A photograph of the desk raised does not show whether it moves smoothly or reliably.
For either desk type, inspect stability and the attachment between top and frame. On a lifting desk, judge movement and stability at the heights you intend to use. Replacement parts and service support may matter more than an extra feature on the control panel.
Specification example
A published range is more useful than “adjustable”
Manufacturer example: IKEA’s UK listing for the 140 × 60 cm electric MITTZON specifies a 62–126 cm height range. This is one configuration, not a range for all sit-stand desks.
| Check | Option or calculation | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum published height | 62 cm on this MITTZON example | A fixed desk has its own stated height |
| Maximum published height | 126 cm on this example | No equivalent working-height travel |
| Used purchase question | Does the supplied desk match this version? | Does its actual height suit the setup? |
Write down the seated and standing working heights you need before comparing mechanisms. A broad advertised range is useful only when it includes those positions with the complete top fitted. Check the model code and current instructions, especially if parts have been replaced.
For a used adjustable desk, ask for a demonstration from lowest to highest setting and back again. Watch for obstructions and cable strain. A fixed desk avoids the lifting mechanism, but still needs the right height and a sound frame.

Put it in a real room
A shared desk used by people of different heights
A shared workstation may benefit from adjustment, but the buying test is practical: can each person set up the desk and equipment appropriately, and are the controls easy to understand? Compare that with a fixed arrangement and suitable adjustable seating. HSE recommends considering the whole workstation and the user in a DSE assessment; a new desk does not replace that assessment.
Side by side
Sit-stand desks vs fixed-height desks
| Decision | Sit-stand desks | Fixed-height desks |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustment | Working surface can move through a specified range | Working height is substantially fixed |
| Equipment | Check rated load and movement clearance | Check load, space and suitable working height |
| Cables | Need enough slack throughout travel | Still need secure, accessible cable management |
| Used inspection | Test controls, columns and full travel | Inspect frame, fixings and levellers |
| Maintenance | More components may need support or replacement | Generally fewer moving components |
| Choice | Useful when height change serves a real need | Useful when the seated setup already fits |
Before ordering
Five checks worth doing
- 01Confirm the finished minimum and maximum height.
- 02Check the manufacturer’s load limit and what it includes.
- 03Identify the exact controller, power supply and model.
- 04Test movement, controls and any stated memory functions.
- 05Confirm instructions, available parts and the actual seller’s warranty terms.
Clear answers
Frequently asked questions
Should I stand all day at a sit-stand desk?
That is not the purpose of this comparison. Choose a setup and working routine appropriate to you; seek a workstation assessment for individual needs or discomfort.
Are all sit-stand desks electric?
No. Manual and other lifting arrangements exist. Compare ease of adjustment and the actual specification.
Is a fixed-height desk a poor choice?
Not automatically. It can be appropriate where the complete seated workstation fits the user and task. Simplicity alone is neither a fault nor a guarantee of suitability.
