Draughtsman chairs vs office chairs: start with the work-surface height

A raised workstation needs more than a standard chair lifted beyond its intended range. The chair, working surface and means of getting on and off must make sense together.

Short answer

Draughtsman chairs are designed for higher working positions and commonly include a foot ring or other foot support. Standard office chairs suit conventional seated desk arrangements. Choose by the manufacturer’s intended use and the actual seat-height range, not by appearance.

Choose on purpose

Which option fits which situation?

01

Choose a draughtsman chair for a raised work surface only after confirming its height range, base and foot-support arrangement.

02

Choose a standard office chair when the actual staff work surface is at ordinary seated height, even if the public counter is higher.

Know what is being compared

A

Draughtsman chairs

A draughtsman chair typically combines a higher seat-height range, backrest and foot-support provision for use at a raised work surface. Base and adjustment details vary.

B

Standard office chairs

A standard office chair is usually intended for a conventional desk-height workstation. It is not automatically suitable for a high counter just because its seat can be raised.

The details that change the decision

01

Use the surface height as the starting measurement

Record the working surface and what happens at it. A reception counter, laboratory bench and drawing station may be at different heights and involve different movements. The chair should be specified for the actual task and setting.

Ask for the full seat-height range and the manufacturer’s intended application. Do not infer suitability from a listing photograph, especially when the chair is shown alone without a desk or a person for scale.

02

Foot support and access are part of the purchase

At a raised seat, the user may not have normal floor contact. Check how the chair provides foot support and whether that support can be positioned appropriately. A ring shown in a photograph is not enough; its adjustment and security need checking.

Consider how the person gets on and off, the available space and the floor. Have the setup assessed for its users and task. Do not use drawers, furniture rails or an improvised box as a substitute for a properly specified arrangement.

03

A taller cylinder is not a universal upgrade kit

A chair’s stability and intended use depend on the complete design, including the base and lifting components. Replacing a standard lift with a taller one does not by itself establish a suitable draughtsman chair. Follow the manufacturer’s approved configurations.

For a used purchase, ask whether the chair retains its original specified parts or has been altered. Confirm the foot ring, glides or castors and all adjustment controls match the intended setup. Any uncertainty is worth resolving before the chair reaches the workplace.

Practical example

Measure the surface where the work happens

A reception can have two heights. Photograph both before choosing the chair.

CheckOption or calculationWhat it tells you
Public counterThe surface visitors stand besideNot necessarily the keyboard height
Staff worktopThe surface used for typing and paperworkMatch the chair to this task
Feet and accessCheck how the person sits down and gets upConfirm suitable foot support at the chosen height

Suppose the public counter is 1,100 mm high and the staff desk behind it is 740 mm. These are illustrative measurements, not recommended heights. A tall chair selected only from the public-facing photograph could be unsuitable for the lower workstation.

Request the exact seat-height range and a picture of the model label. For used chairs, confirm the correct lift, base and foot ring are present. Do not calculate a chair’s suitability from a fixed universal gap between seat and desk; the person, task and equipment all matter.

Put it in a real room

A high reception counter with seated admin work

The visible public counter may be high while the staff work surface behind it is much lower. Buying a draughtsman chair based only on the public-facing height could therefore be a mistake. Measure the surface where the keyboard and paperwork will actually be used, then assess the chair at that position. This is also why reception photographs alone are a poor basis for a seating order.

Before ordering

Five checks worth doing

  1. 01Measure the actual staff work surface, not an adjacent raised panel.
  2. 02Confirm seat-height range and intended application.
  3. 03Test the foot-support adjustment and locking mechanism.
  4. 04Check the specified base, floor contact and access arrangement.
  5. 05Ask whether any lifting or base components have been replaced.

Clear answers

Frequently asked questions

Is a draughtsman chair the same as a bar stool?

No. The terms describe different furniture types and intended uses. Compare support, adjustment and application rather than height alone.

Can it be used at a normal office desk?

Only if its range and design suit that workstation and user. Many raised chairs will not lower sufficiently for a conventional setup.

Should a draughtsman chair have wheels?

Base requirements depend on the model and setting. Follow the manufacturer’s specification and the workplace assessment.
