Frequently Asked Questions About Office Desks
What different desks cost, how much space you need and which details are worth paying for.
Size and fit
Is a 60 inch desk too big?
A 60 inch desk is about 152 cm wide, so it is not unusually large for a workstation. That width can be useful for two screens, a keyboard and some paperwork without squeezing everything together.
The room becomes the deciding factor. A 152 cm wide desk that is shallow enough to fit against a wall may work better than a narrower desk with a bulky return. Mark its full footprint on the floor and pull your chair out before deciding. You need room to use the desk, not just enough wall space to park it.
Is a 55 inch desk too big?
A 55 inch desk is about 140 cm wide, which is a useful middle size for one person. It gives you more room than a compact laptop desk without taking up as much wall space as a large workstation.
It is likely to suit a screen, keyboard and a modest amount of paperwork. Two screens may also fit, but their stands and the desk depth determine how much space is left in front of you. Tape out roughly 140 cm on the wall or floor and arrange your equipment within it. That will tell you more than the size label alone.
What is the smallest desk size?
A small laptop desk can be much narrower than a full workstation. As an example, the MICKE range includes a desk around 73 cm wide, while its 105 cm version provides more surface and storage. These are product examples, not minimum workspace standards.
The smallest desk worth buying still needs to accommodate the equipment you use. When browsing our rectangular office desks, check width and depth together. A laptop can fit on a tiny top while leaving no room for a separate keyboard, mouse or notebook. Measure the working arrangement you need rather than the closed laptop.

Choosing a desk
What should every office desk have?
Every office desk needs enough clear surface for the work, usable space for your legs and a stable base. Beyond those essentials, cable management and somewhere for everyday items usually make the biggest difference.
If paperwork keeps taking over the keyboard area, a pedestal cabinet can give it a place beside or beneath the desk. Choose a drawer layout that suits what you store, and leave enough knee space. A filing drawer and a shallow stationery drawer solve different problems. You do not need to fill the desk with accessories to make it useful.
Which brand of standing desk is best?
For a standing desk, the best brand is the one whose actual desk fits your seated and standing working heights and has dependable support for the mechanism. A smart looking top cannot compensate for a frame that does not lower enough for you.
In our height adjustable desk range, check the individual model's adjustment method, working range and included controls rather than assuming every desk is powered. With a used electric model, confirm that its handset and power supply are included and that it moves properly. A named brand without the necessary components is not a complete purchase.
How to make your office desk look professional?
Give the desk a clear working area, route loose cables neatly and keep everyday items in a deliberate place. A tidy screen and keyboard arrangement usually makes more difference than buying decorative accessories.
If paperwork is the main problem, our pedestal cabinets and office cupboards give you different ways to move it off the working surface. Use a pedestal for items you reach for daily and a cupboard for material that can sit further away. If the desk is visible on video calls, look at it from the camera's position too. It should feel organised without becoming a display you have to dismantle before working.
What are the benefits of a white desk?
A white desk is easy to coordinate with other furniture and can keep a small workspace looking visually simple. It is also a practical choice when you expect to add storage or replace individual pieces later, because you are not trying to match a distinctive wood grain.
The finish matters more than the colour for everyday wear. On a used white desk, inspect the edges and heavily used areas around the keyboard. Also consider reflections from a nearby window or lamp. A bright appearance is useful only if the working surface is comfortable to look at.
Types and terminology
What are L shaped desks called?
They are usually called L shaped desks, corner desks or desks with a return. A return is the extra surface that extends from the main desk to form the L.
The distinction is useful when buying used. A desk with a separate return may be easier to rearrange or transport than a single shaped top. Check whether the return goes on the left or right from the seated position, because the wrong orientation can put the longer section across a doorway or into your room.
What is a large office desk called?
A large office desk is often sold as an executive desk or director's desk. If it has an additional surface extending to one side, it may be described as a workstation with a return.
These names describe the style rather than a guaranteed size. An executive desk can take up much more space than its top suggests once you include drawer units, the chair and the area needed for visitors. Use the dimensions to plan the room, not the title in the listing.
Why is it called a writing desk?
It is called a writing desk because it was designed around a clear surface for writing and reading rather than a complete workstation with equipment and storage. The name is still used for relatively simple, often compact desks.
A writing desk can work well with a laptop, but a desktop setup asks more of it. The depth needs to accommodate the screen and keyboard, and cables need a sensible route. Some decorative writing desks also have shallow drawers or rails beneath the top that reduce knee space.
What is a cantilever desk?
A cantilever desk has supporting uprights set back from the front, with feet extending along the floor. From the side, the frame often resembles a C rather than four separate corner legs.
That arrangement can leave the front of the desk feeling more open and make it easier to move your chair or legs. On a used desk, examine the joints, feet and bracing because those parts are doing the structural work. The frame style alone does not establish how stable an individual desk will be.
What is a two person desk called?
A shared desk for two people is usually called a two person workstation, double desk or bench desk. The users may sit next to each other or opposite each other, depending on the layout.
The difference matters when buying. A long desk advertised for two users might simply divide its width between them, while a bench workstation can provide two separate working positions. Work out the surface, legroom and cable access each person gets. The number of advertised seats is less useful if one person cannot work without disturbing the other.
What is a desk with shelves called?
A desk with shelving above the worktop is often called a desk with a hutch or an integrated shelving desk. If the shelves sit beside it, the listing may describe a workstation with storage or a desk and bookcase combination.
Our office storage guide is useful if the aim is to keep supplies close without crowding the screen or leg space. Upper storage must be part of a suitable combination and installed as instructed. A separate shelf placed on top is not automatically a safe hutch, and it may be simpler to use a separate cupboard or pedestal.
Materials
What type of wood is best for a desk?
For a solid wood desk, oak is a sensible starting point if you want a substantial appearance and a surface that can be refinished. A suitable veneered or laminate finished desk may be better value if you mainly want a practical working surface rather than a timber feature.
The important distinction is between the wood you can see and the construction underneath. A walnut appearance could mean solid walnut, a thin real wood veneer or a printed finish. Our desk buying guide helps you consider construction alongside the size and use of the desk. A wood effect description should not be mistaken for a promise of solid timber.
What are the disadvantages of melamine wood?
The main disadvantages of a melamine finished desk are that damaged edges can expose the board underneath and a badly chipped surface is not as straightforward to refinish as solid timber. The finish is useful for everyday office furniture, but it does not make every underlying board waterproof or structurally strong.
When buying used, inspect the edges, cable openings and any swollen areas rather than just the centre of the top. Good edging and sound joints matter. A melamine finish can be a practical choice without being the right material for every environment.
What is the fake wood for desks called?
What people call fake wood is often a wood effect finish over an engineered board. The top might be chipboard or MDF with a printed decorative surface. A veneer is different: it is a thin layer of real wood over a supporting material.
Engineered board is not automatically poor quality, and a wood grain appearance does not establish solid timber. Ask for both parts of the description: what the core is made from and what covers it. That tells you far more about the desk than the word wooden on its own.
Which is better, MDF or melamine?
MDF is the board underneath; melamine is a surface finish. They are not competing types of wood, and the same panel can be both MDF and melamine faced.
For example, one desk may use melamine faced chipboard and another melamine faced MDF. They can look similar from above while having different cores. To judge the complete top, look at its core, finish, edges and support. A listing that only says melamine tells you about the surface, not everything you need to know about the construction.
How thick should wood be for a desk top?
Desktop thickness has to be chosen with the material and frame, not in isolation. A thick looking top can still have a lightweight core, while a thinner top may be properly supported by the frame beneath it.
Long unsupported spans and concentrated loads such as monitor arm clamps deserve particular attention. A top that carries an evenly spread load is not necessarily suitable for a heavy clamp at the edge. Our desk buying guide is a useful starting point for choosing a complete desk, but a custom top or clamp arrangement still needs the relevant product specifications.
Where can I buy a solid wood desk?
Look at solid timber furniture specialists, joiners and used furniture dealers that describe the construction clearly. Ask whether the top itself is solid wood, not just the legs or a strip around the edge.
For a used desk, an underside photograph and a close view of the edges can help distinguish solid timber from veneer or a printed finish. Buying used can make a substantial timber desk more affordable, but include its weight and delivery route in the decision. A large solid top can be awkward to move even when the frame dismantles.
What is the best colour to paint a desk?
An off white, muted grey or natural timber look is a practical starting point if you want the desk to sit quietly within a home room. A stronger colour can work well when the desk is meant to be a feature, especially in a creative space or on camera.
Choose the coating for the surface before choosing the shade. Paint that suits unfinished timber may not adhere properly to a laminate finish without the right preparation. Test a sample in the room's light and allow the coating to cure as instructed before putting equipment back.
Price and value
What is a good price for a used desk?
Two useful price references from our shop on 23 October 2026 were £67.50 for a 120 cm Haworth desk and £112.50 for a 200 cm D end workstation. Those are individual advertised item prices, not a valuation for every used desk, and delivery needs to be added separately.
A sound frame and an unbroken top matter more than a perfect cosmetic finish. A few surface marks may be an acceptable saving; missing supports, swollen board or a faulty height mechanism can make a cheap desk expensive to put right. Judge the final delivered price against a desk you could actually use, rather than the original retail price.

Why are office desks so expensive?
You are often paying for the structure underneath an office desk, not just the piece of board on top. A larger span needs suitable support. A powered desk adds lifting columns, controls and electrical components. Storage, cable systems, specialist finishes and installation can add further cost.
Spend extra where it buys something you will use. Our height adjustable desks are relevant if changing working height matters to you; a straightforward fixed desk may be enough for a laptop and screen. Check the mechanism on the individual listing, because height adjustment does not always mean electric operation.
Why are L shaped desks so expensive?
An L shaped desk uses more surface, support and floor space than a simple straight desk, so there can be more material, handling and assembly in the price. Built in drawers, cable management and a substantial return can add to that.
It earns the extra cost when you use the two surfaces for different tasks, such as computer work on one side and paperwork on the other. If the return becomes somewhere to leave clutter, a straight desk and separate storage may do more for the room. Measure the useful surface and the space it takes, not just the overall width.
How much should I spend on a home office desk?
Spend enough to get the working size and construction you need before paying for decorative finishes or extra mechanisms. To put actual numbers against that, two desks advertised in our shop on 23 October 2026 were a 120 cm Haworth at £67.50 and a 200 cm workstation at £112.50, before delivery. They are examples, not a budget for every setup.
For occasional laptop use, a compact desk may be enough. If you work there every day with multiple screens and paperwork, usable depth and a stable frame deserve more of the budget. Leave money for the chair too; an impressive desk is not a complete workspace.

Buying used
Are used desks worth buying?
Yes. A structurally sound used desk can give you the working space you need without paying for a new one. Desks are particularly sensible to buy used when the wear is cosmetic rather than structural.
Delivery and setup
Where can I buy a desk already built?
You can look for an assembled desk through My Used Furniture's office desk range, but ask us to confirm the delivery format of the particular item before ordering. A used desk may be photographed built and still need dismantling for transport or access.
If avoiding assembly is the reason you are buying, tell us that at the enquiry stage. Confirm the largest component and whether the agreed service includes carrying the desk to its final position. Delivery and installation are different services; our delivery information explains the standard arrangements.

How to extend an existing desk?
The simplest way to extend a desk is to add a compatible return or a second supported surface at the same height. This gives you more working area without asking the existing top to carry an unsupported overhang.
If you mainly need somewhere for documents or stationery, one of our pedestal cabinets may solve the problem without adding another desk. A desk height pedestal can provide a side surface only when its dimensions and intended use suit the arrangement. Check the actual unit; not every pedestal is desk height or rated to carry equipment.
Can you attach a keyboard tray to a desk?
Yes, a keyboard tray can be added to many desks, provided the top and underside can take the specified fixings. Check for drawers, rails and cable trays before choosing one, because they may occupy the same space.
The tray also needs to leave enough room for your thighs and bring the keyboard to a useful height. A tray that lowers the keyboard but forces your knees down is not an improvement. Follow the fixing instructions, especially with hollow or lightweight tops, and do not assume screws will hold simply because the surface looks thick.
Brands and models
Are IKEA desks good quality?
Yes, an IKEA desk can be a sensible purchase for a home workspace, but the range includes very different constructions. The MICKE, for example, is a compact domestic desk with engineered board and honeycomb filled components. It is not a solid timber desk or automatically equivalent to a commercial workstation.
That construction can be perfectly practical for its intended use. The limitations matter when you want to move the desk repeatedly, add equipment or attach accessories. For a used example, sound joints and undamaged fixing points are more useful signs than the IKEA name alone.

Who makes the best office desks?
For a compact home desk, IKEA is a useful starting point. For a workplace setup, include commercial office furniture suppliers in your search, especially if you need several matching desks, replacement components or a coordinated storage system.
Our recommendation is to choose the desk category before the manufacturer. A well made fixed desk may be better value than an inexpensive powered desk whose extra movement you do not need. Once you know the size, construction and adjustment you want, the brand shortlist becomes much more useful than a general league table.

How does the MICKE desk compare to other desks?
The 105 by 50 cm MICKE is a compact home desk with built in storage and a cable outlet. Its main attraction is fitting a useful workstation into a small room. Its 50 cm depth gives you less room for a screen, keyboard and paperwork than a deeper desk.
It also uses engineered board and honeycomb filled components rather than solid timber. Our view is that it makes more sense as a compact domestic desk than as a substitute for every commercial workstation. If you need a large equipment layout or frequent rearrangement, look beyond its tidy appearance to the space and construction you need.
